<FONT COLOR="#AA0000">■ 序Preface</FONT> THE Chinese Academy of Social Sciences（CASS）is the largest research institution in the fields of social sciences and the humanities in the People’s Republic of China‧CASS is now made up of 33 research institutions and 50 research centers with 4000 researchers and staff members in both，who carry our research activities which cover almost all disiciplines of social sciences and humanities‧The Graduate school，which is affiliated with the Academy，annually replenished the institutes with newly graduated Ph‧D‧students. CASS scholars publish more than 200 books annually，which are influential to the Chinese society‧However，it is a pity that only a small number of books can be translated into English to be distributed in the international academic society‧It is no doubt that the information is nor disseminated sufficiently． It is impossible for us to translate all the books into English owing to the constraints of manpower and budget，but we are still committed to make our best efforts to translate abstracts of the most important books and articles in order to keep the international academic society familiar with the ideas the Chinese scholars brought up and knowledge they created‧The publication will help the international community to understand better Chinese academic circles. The 115abstracts in this selection are published articals and monographs of CASS scholars in the past two years，which cover a wide range of social sciences and the humanities studies‧They were selected and recommended to the board of editors by academic commissions in the research institutes‧These works，to various extents，reflect the development and direction of social science research at the dawn of the new millennium.
